At Nurture Kids Dentistry, our primary goal is always to save your child’s natural teeth. However, there are times when removing a tooth (extraction) is the best decision for your child's overall oral health.

We understand that the idea of "pulling a tooth" can sound scary to a child. Dr. Jumani and his team are experts at normalizing the experience, using gentle techniques and kid-friendly language to ensure your child feels safe, brave, and comfortable throughout the visit.

When is an Extraction Necessary?

Dr. Jumani recommends extractions only when necessary. Common reasons include:

  • Severe Decay: If a cavity has destroyed so much of the tooth structure that it cannot be fixed with a filling or crown, or if there is a severe infection (abscess) that won't clear up.
  • Trauma: If a tooth has been cracked or broken below the gum line due to a fall or sports injury.
  • "Over-Retained" Baby Teeth: Sometimes a baby tooth refuses to fall out on its own! If the permanent tooth is coming in behind it (creating a "shark tooth" appearance), we may need to wiggle the baby tooth out to let the adult tooth move into the correct spot.
  • Orthodontic Correction: Dr. Jumani may recommend removing specific teeth to relieve severe crowding and create space for a straight smile.

The "Comfort First" Procedure

We don't just pull teeth; we care for children.

  • Numbing the "Sleepy Juice": We use a powerful local anesthetic gel and solution to completely numb the area. Your child will feel pressure, but they will not feel pain.
  • Distraction: With TVs on the ceiling and a reassuring team, we keep your child's mind occupied.
  • The "Wiggle": Dr. Jumani uses gentle pressure to wiggle the tooth loose. We avoid using scary words like "yank" or "pull."
  • Space Maintainers: If a baby molar is removed early, we may recommend a Space Maintainer. This simple device holds the gap open so the permanent tooth has room to erupt later.

Will my child be in pain afterwards?
Most children are surprisingly resilient! For a simple baby tooth extraction, the recovery is very fast. They may have some gum soreness for 24 hours, which can usually be managed with over-the-counter Tylenol or Motrin. We recommend cold treats (popsicles, ice cream) to help numb the area naturally and reduce swelling.
Can they go to school the next day?
Yes. Most children return to school the very next day with no issues. If the extraction was more complex or involved sedation, we might recommend keeping them home for 24 hours to rest.
What can they eat?
For the first 24 hours, stick to a Soft Diet. Yogurt, pudding, mashed potatoes, scrambled eggs, and lukewarm soup are great. Avoid crunchy foods (chips, popcorn) or seeds (strawberries) that could get stuck in the socket.
Can they use a straw?
No. This is very important! Sucking on a straw creates a vacuum in the mouth that can dislodge the blood clot forming in the socket. This can lead to a painful condition called "Dry Socket." Avoid straws, sippy cups with valves, and spitting forcefully for at least 3 days.
