Sometimes, a child’s dental needs are too complex, or their anxiety is too severe, to be managed with just "laughing gas" or gentle coaching. In these situations, forcing a child to sit through treatment can be traumatic and unsafe.

At Nurture Kids Dentistry, we offer General Anesthesia as a compassionate solution. This allows your child to sleep completely through their dental treatment—just like they would for a tonsil surgery or ear tube placement—and wake up with their smile fully restored.

Who Is This For?

Dr. Jumani may recommend General Anesthesia for:

  • Pre-Cooperative Children: Very young children (toddlers) who cannot understand instructions or sit still safely.
  • High Anxiety: Children with severe dental phobia where other sedation methods have not worked.
  • Extensive Needs: Children requiring a large volume of work (e.g., full mouth reconstruction) that would otherwise take 4-6 separate stressful visits.
  • Special Healthcare Needs: Children with sensory processing disorders, autism, or physical limitations that make sitting in a chair difficult.

How It Works: Hospital Safety in a Comfortable Office

We bring the safety standards of the hospital directly to our office.

  • The Team: Dr. Jumani focuses entirely on the dentistry (fixing the teeth), while a separate, Board-Certified Anesthesiologist focuses entirely on your child’s safety (monitoring breathing, heart rate, and medication).
  • The Experience: Your child will drift off to sleep peacefully. While they are asleep, they feel no pain and have no memory of the sounds or sensations. We complete all necessary x-rays, cleanings, fillings, crowns, and extractions in this single visit.
  • The Recovery: Your child wakes up in our recovery area with you by their side. Most children are able to go home within an hour of waking up.

Frequently Asked Questions
Expert Answers to Your Common Questions

Is General Anesthesia safe?
Yes. While all anesthesia carries some risk, modern pediatric anesthesia is extremely safe when administered by a specialist. Our anesthesiologist evaluates your child’s medical history thoroughly before the appointment. We follow strict safety protocols identical to those used in hospitals, including advanced monitoring equipment and emergency preparedness.
What are the "Fasting" (NPO) rules?
This is the most critical safety rule. Your child must not eat or drink anything for a specific number of hours before the appointment (usually no food for 8 hours, clear liquids up to 2 hours before). This prevents the risk of aspiration (vomiting and inhaling it into the lungs). If these rules are broken, we must cancel the appointment for your child's safety.
Will my child be groggy afterwards?
Yes. It is normal for children to feel sleepy, irritable, or "floppy" for a few hours after waking up. They may also have some nausea. We recommend planning a quiet day at home with supervision. By the next morning, most children are back to their normal energy levels.
Does insurance cover anesthesia?
Dental insurance usually covers the dental procedures (crowns, fillings). However, the anesthesia fee is often billed separately. Some medical insurance plans may cover it, depending on the diagnosis. Our Treatment Coordinator will work with you to provide a detailed cost estimate and explain your benefits before scheduling.
