For many children, the anticipation of a dental visit is worse than the visit itself. The sights, sounds, and unfamiliar environment can make even a simple cleaning feel overwhelming.

At Nurture Kids Dentistry, we use Nitrous Oxide (commonly known as "Laughing Gas" or "Happy Air") to help take the edge off. It is the safest, mildest, and most common form of sedation used in pediatric dentistry.

What Is It?

Nitrous Oxide is a sweet-smelling, colorless gas that your child breathes in through a small, comfortable mask that sits over their nose. It is mixed with pure oxygen.

It does not put your child to sleep. Instead, it creates a feeling of:

  • Relaxation and calmness.
  • Warmth or "tingliness" in the fingers and toes.
  • Mild euphoria (giggling), which helps the time pass quickly.
  • Reduced gag reflex.

The "No Hangover" Recovery

One of the biggest benefits of Nitrous Oxide is that it has zero lingering effects.

  • During Treatment: Your child stays awake, can watch movies on the ceiling, and can talk to Dr. Jumani.
  • After Treatment: Once the procedure is done, we turn off the gas and let your child breathe 100% pure oxygen for about 5 minutes. This flushes the nitrous out of their system completely.
  • Back to Normal: By the time they stand up from the chair, they are back to their normal self. They can go back to school, play sports, or carry on with their day immediately.

Frequently Asked Questions
Expert Answers to Your Common Questions

Does it numb the teeth? Do we still need a shot?
This is a common misconception. Nitrous Oxide manages anxiety, not pain. While it raises the pain threshold slightly (making things bother them less), it does not numb the tooth. For procedures like fillings or extractions, Dr. Jumani will still use local anesthesia ("sleepy juice"), but the gas makes the injection much easier to tolerate.
Will my child act "loopy" or say funny things like in viral videos?
No. Those viral videos usually show patients recovering from IV sedation or general anesthesia (where deeper drugs are used). With Nitrous Oxide, your child remains rational and coherent. They might feel a bit dreamy or giggle, but they won't lose control of their behavior or speech.
What if my child has a stuffy nose or a cold?
If your child cannot breathe through their nose, Nitrous Oxide will not work. The gas must be inhaled through the nose to be effective. If your child arrives with severe congestion or a cold, we may need to reschedule the appointment or proceed without the gas, as safety and effectiveness are our top priorities.
Can my child eat before the appointment?
We recommend a light meal about 2 hours before the visit (e.g., toast or yogurt). Avoid a heavy, greasy meal (like a cheeseburger) right before coming in. While nausea is rare with modern nitrous delivery, a very full stomach can sometimes lead to vomiting if the child has a sensitive gag reflex.
