At Nurture Kids Dentistry, our philosophy is simple: Less is More.

We believe in preserving as much of your child's healthy natural tooth structure as possible. Thanks to advancements in modern dentistry, the drill is no longer the only tool in our toolbox. Dr. Ketan Jumani specializes in Minimally Invasive Dentistry (MID)—a gentle, conservative approach that focuses on prevention, early detection, and treating decay without removing healthy enamel.

Our Minimally Invasive Treatments

Silver Diamine Fluoride (SDF)

The "Cavity Stopper" SDF is an FDA-approved liquid that we paint onto a cavity. It acts like a "fire extinguisher" for tooth decay.

  • How it Works: The silver kills the bacteria causing the cavity, while the fluoride strengthens the tooth structure.
  • The Benefit: It stops active decay in less than a minute with no drilling and no numbing shots.
  • The Trade-off: SDF will permanently stain the decayed part of the tooth black (indicating the cavity has died). It is an excellent option for baby teeth that will eventually fall out or for very anxious children who cannot tolerate drilling.

Icon Resin Infiltration

Have you noticed chalky white spots on your child's teeth (often after braces come off)? These are often the earliest stage of cavities.

  • How it Works: Instead of "drilling and filling," we use a special fluid resin that soaks into the micropores of the white spot.
  • The Benefit: It reinforces the weak enamel and makes the white spot visually disappear, blending in with the healthy tooth.
  • The Result: A stronger, more aesthetic smile with zero drilling.

The Hall Technique

Divider
For baby molars with decay, we can often seal the cavity under a stainless steel crown without removing any tooth structure.

  • How it Works: We place a crown over the tooth to trap the bacteria and cut off their nutrient supply.
  • The Benefit: No shots, no drilling, and highly effective.

Frequently Asked Questions
Expert Answers to Your Common Questions

Is Minimally Invasive Dentistry right for every child?
It depends on the size and location of the cavity. These techniques work best on small-to-medium cavities or early-stage decay. If a tooth is broken or has a very deep cavity reaching the nerve, traditional restorative methods (like a filling or pulpotomy) may be required to save it. Dr. Jumani will evaluate your child’s X-rays to see if they are a candidate.
Will the black stain from SDF go away?
No, the black stain on the cavity is permanent (until the baby tooth falls out). However, healthy enamel will not be stained. Because of the aesthetics, many parents choose SDF for back teeth but prefer white fillings or Icon treatment for front teeth.
Does this approach cost more?
Actually, it often costs less! Treatments like SDF are typically less expensive than a traditional filling or crown. Plus, by catching and treating problems early without invasive surgery, we save you money on complex treatments down the road.
Is it painful?
Minimally invasive techniques are generally pain-free. Since we aren't drilling deep into the tooth or touching the nerve, we rarely need to use local anesthesia (shots). This makes it the perfect choice for children who are afraid of needles.
