When a baby tooth is significantly damaged by decay or trauma, a simple filling is often not strong enough to hold it together. In the past, the only option was a silver-colored stainless steel crown. While functional, many parents (and kids!) disliked the metallic "robot tooth" look.

At Nurture Kids Dentistry, we are proud to offer Zirconia Crowns—the modern, aesthetic gold standard in pediatric restoration. Made from solid ceramic (zirconium oxide), these crowns are incredibly strong and look exactly like natural teeth.

Why We Choose Zirconia

  • 100% Metal-Free: Zirconia is a biocompatible ceramic. It is the perfect choice for families who want to avoid metals or for children with nickel sensitivities.
  • Indestructible Strength: Zirconia is one of the hardest ceramics used in dentistry. It is exceptionally resistant to wear, chipping, and cracking, meaning your child can eat, play, and smile without worry.
  • Natural Beauty: These crowns are translucent and color-matched to blend seamlessly with your child’s other teeth. They are especially popular for restoring front teeth, ensuring your child’s smile remains bright and confident.

How the Crown Works

Think of a crown as a "helmet" for the tooth.

  • Preparation: After ensuring your child is numb and comfortable, Dr. Jumani gently removes the decay and shapes the tooth to fit inside the crown.
  • Placement: Because Zirconia crowns come in pre-made sizes, there are no messy impressions or temporary crowns. We select the perfect size and cement it permanently in place during the same visit.
  • Natural Shedding: The crown is attached only to the baby tooth. When the baby tooth is ready to fall out naturally, the crown falls out with it.

Frequently Asked Questions
Expert Answers to Your Common Questions

Is Zirconia better than Stainless Steel?
"Better" depends on your priorities. Structurally, Zirconia is harder and more durable than thin stainless steel. Aesthetically, it is far superior. However, Zirconia crowns are rigid and require more precise tooth preparation than metal crowns, which are flexible. Dr. Jumani will help you decide which is best based on how much tooth structure remains and your child’s cooperation level.
Are Zirconia crowns covered by insurance?
Most dental insurance plans cover pediatric crowns. However, many plans reimburse at the rate of a Stainless Steel crown (which is cheaper). This means there may be an "upgrade fee" or out-of-pocket difference for choosing the white aesthetic crown. We will always provide a detailed financial estimate before treatment.
Can my child eat hard foods (like apples or corn) with these crowns?
Yes! Once the cement has fully set (usually after 24 hours), Zirconia crowns are incredibly strong. Your child can bite into apples, corn on the cob, and carrots just like they would with natural teeth. We only advise avoiding extremely sticky candies (like taffy) that could pull any crown loose.
Will the gums look dark around the crown?
No. One of the downsides of older porcelain-fused-to-metal crowns was the "black line" that would appear at the gum line. Because Zirconia crowns are white ceramic through and through, the gum line remains healthy and pink, with no dark shadowing.
