Home / Pediatric Dentistry / Special Needs Dentistry

Finding a dentist who truly understands and accommodates a child with special needs can be a challenge for parents. At Nurture Kids Dentistry, we believe that every child—regardless of their developmental, physical, or cognitive abilities—deserves a "Dental Home" where they are treated with patience, dignity, and expert care.

Dr. Ketan Jumani is a Board-Certified Pediatric Dentist, which means he has completed two additional years of specialized training beyond dental school. A significant portion of this training is dedicated to the psychological and medical management of patients with special healthcare needs.

Our Adaptive Approach: Patience Over Speed

We know that a standard dental appointment doesn't work for everyone. We customize our approach to fit your child’s comfort level.

  • Desensitization Visits: For children who are fearful or sensory-sensitive, we can schedule "Happy Visits." We might just ride in the chair, count teeth, or look at the tools without doing any actual work. This builds trust over time.
  • Sensory Accommodations: We can dim the lights, turn off the music, or provide sunglasses to reduce stimulation. We invite you to bring your child’s favorite comfort item, headphones, or weighted blanket.
  • Wheelchair Accessible: Our office in the Sammamish Village Medical Pavilion is fully accessible. Depending on your child's comfort, we can treat them in their wheelchair or gently transfer them to the dental chair.
  • Parental Partnership: You are the expert on your child. We listen to you first. Tell us what triggers them, what soothes them, and how we can best communicate.

Frequently Asked Questions
Expert Answers to Your Common Questions
Divider

My child refuses to open their mouth or sit in the chair. Can you still see them?
Yes. We are trained in various behavior management techniques. For some children, a "knee-to-knee" exam (where they sit on your lap) works best. For others, we may utilize "Tell-Show-Do" to slowly introduce tools. If a child is physically combative or highly distressed, we may discuss sedation options to ensure they get the care they need safely.
Brushing at home is a battle. What can we do?
This is a very common struggle. We can prescribe special high-fluoride toothpaste (prescription strength) or antimicrobial rinses to help protect their teeth when brushing is less than perfect. We can also demonstrate different holding techniques or recommend 3-sided toothbrushes that clean all surfaces at once to make the process faster.
Do you treat adults with special needs?
Pediatric dentists are the primary providers for individuals with special needs, often well into adulthood. Because we are familiar with their history and they are comfortable in our environment, we are happy to continue seeing our special needs patients through their teen years and often into young adulthood, depending on their specific needs.
Is sedation available for special needs patients?
Yes. For patients who cannot tolerate treatment in the chair due to sensory overload or cognitive barriers, General Anesthesia is often the kindest and safest option. It allows us to complete all X-rays, cleanings, and restorative work in one visit while they sleep, avoiding trauma and physical restraint.
