The "Magic Cap" Technique: No Drills, No Tears
Hall Crowns
For many children, the scariest part of the dentist is the sound of the drill or the pinch of a "sleepy juice" needle. But what if we could fix a cavity without either of those things?
At Nurture Kids Dentistry, Dr. Jumani offers the Hall Technique—a revolutionary, evidence-based method for managing cavities in baby back teeth. It is minimally invasive, fast, and often requires zero local anesthesia (shots).
How Can You Fix a Cavity Without Drilling?
Traditional dentistry involves drilling out the decay and filling the hole. The Hall Technique takes a different approach: Biology over Mechanics.Instead of removing the decay, we seal it inside the tooth using a medical-grade Stainless Steel Crown.
- The Seal: The crown is cemented over the tooth, creating a hermetic (airtight) seal.
- Starvation: The bacteria that cause cavities need sugar and oxygen to survive. By sealing them off completely, they are cut off from their food source.
- Arrest: The bacteria die or become inactive, the decay stops growing, and the tooth is protected until it falls out naturally.
The 3-Step Process
The Hall Technique is simple and gentle, making it perfect for anxious children.- Preparation (Spacers): Because we aren't drilling away tooth structure to make room for the crown, we may place small rubber bands (spacers) between the teeth a few days before the procedure. This gently creates a tiny gap.
- Placement: At the main appointment, Dr. Jumani removes the spacers, fills a crown with a bioactive cement, and gently pushes it over the tooth.
- The "Bite": Your child helps by biting down to seat the crown in place. We wipe away the extra cement, and they are done!
Frequently Asked Questions
Expert Answers to Your Common Questions

Is it really safe to leave the decay inside the tooth?
Yes. This concept is backed by decades of clinical research in the UK and US. As long as the seal remains intact, the decay cannot progress. It does not harm the nerve or cause an abscess if the case is selected correctly. Dr. Jumani will take X-rays to ensure the decay hasn't already reached the nerve before recommending this method.
Why does my child’s bite look "open" after the appointment?
Because we are adding a cap to the top of the tooth without shaving the tooth down, the crown will feel "high" at first. Your child’s back teeth might touch while their front teeth don't. Do not worry! This is temporary. Children have very adaptable jaws, and their bite will naturally adjust and settle into a comfortable position within 2 to 4 weeks.
Can we use a white (Zirconia) crown with this technique?
Unfortunately, no. Zirconia crowns are rigid ceramic; they cannot flex to snap over a natural tooth shape. They require drilling to fit properly. The Hall Technique relies on the flexibility of Stainless Steel Crowns to mold over the existing tooth structure.
Does it hurt when you push the crown on?
Most children describe a feeling of "pressure" or "pushing," but not sharp pain. Because there is no drilling or cutting of the tooth, the nerve isn't aggravated. We can do this procedure while your child watches a movie, and they are usually surprised when it’s over so quickly!
