Finding out your child has a cavity can be stressful, but fixing it doesn't have to be. At Nurture Kids Dentistry, we have said goodbye to the dark silver (amalgam) fillings of the past.

We use Composite Resin Fillings—a durable, tooth-colored material that blends perfectly with your child’s natural enamel. Our goal is to repair the tooth so naturally that even your child won't be able to tell which tooth was treated!

Why We Choose Composite

Dr. Jumani prioritizes materials that are safe, strong, and aesthetically pleasing.

  • Aesthetic: The filling material comes in various shades of white. We color-match it to your child's specific tooth shade, making the restoration virtually invisible.
  • Conservative: Unlike silver fillings, which require a specific shape to "lock" in, composite bonds directly to the tooth structure. This allows us to preserve more of your child's healthy natural tooth.
  • Safe & Metal-Free: We are a mercury-free practice. We use high-quality, BPA-free materials that are safe for growing bodies.

The Filling Process

We treat fillings as a routine, non-scary event.

  • Comfort First: We ensure your child is completely comfortable. If needed, we use local anesthesia ("sleepy juice") to numb the area so they feel no pain.
  • Cleaning the Tooth: Dr. Jumani gently removes the decay (the "sugar bugs") and cleans the area thoroughly.
  • Sculpting: The composite gel is applied in layers. Dr. Jumani sculpts it to recreate the natural shape and grooves of the tooth.
  • Setting: A special blue curing light is used to harden the filling in seconds.
  • Polishing: We smooth and polish the filling so it feels natural to the tongue.

How long do white fillings last?
Composite fillings are very durable. On baby teeth, they usually last until the tooth falls out naturally. On permanent teeth, they can last 5-7 years or more, depending on your child's oral hygiene and diet. Heavy grinders or ice-chewers may wear them down faster, requiring a touch-up.
Can my child eat immediately after the appointment?
Yes! The curing light hardens the material instantly, so there is no waiting period for the filling to "dry." However, if your child is numb, we recommend sticking to a soft diet (smoothies, yogurt, mashed potatoes) until the anesthesia wears off. This prevents them from accidentally biting their numb lip, cheek, or tongue.
Why don't you use silver (amalgam) fillings?
While the ADA considers amalgam safe, many parents prefer to avoid mercury-containing materials. Beyond that, silver fillings expand and contract with temperature changes (like drinking hot cocoa or cold ice water), which can eventually cause the natural tooth to crack. Composite resin bonds the tooth together, actually strengthening the remaining structure.
Will my child feel pain after the numbness wears off?
It is normal for a tooth to be slightly sensitive to cold or heat for a few days after a filling, especially if the cavity was deep. This usually goes away on its own. If your child complains of a throbbing pain or if the tooth feels "high" when they bite down after a few days, please give us a call.
