Did you know that athletes are 60 times more likely to suffer harm to their teeth when not wearing a mouth guard?

Sports are a great way for children to build confidence and stay active, but a stray ball, a fall, or an accidental elbow can change a smile in an instant. At Nurture Kids Dentistry, we believe that safety gear shouldn't stop at helmets and shin guards.

Whether your child plays football, soccer, basketball, lacrosse, or even participates in gymnastics, a properly fitted mouth guard is an essential piece of equipment.

Why Choose a Custom Guard?

You can buy a generic "boil-and-bite" mouth guard at any sporting goods store, but they often fail when it matters most. Here is why a custom guard from Dr. Jumani is the safer choice:

  • Superior Fit: We take a precise impression of your child’s unique bite. The guard stays locked in place, even during high-impact play.
  • Better Breathing: Because it fits snugly without being bulky, your child can breathe and speak clearly. This means they are less likely to take it out during the game.
  • Maximum Protection: Custom guards are designed with the proper thickness to absorb shock and distribute impact, reducing the risk of broken teeth, lip cuts, and even jaw fractures.

The Process: Easy as 1-2-3

Getting a custom guard is simple and quick!

  • Impression: At a routine visit (or a specific short appointment), we take a quick mold of your child’s top teeth.
  • Fabrication: We fabricate the guard in our lab using durable, professional-grade material.
  • Delivery: A few days later, your child tries it on to ensure a perfect fit.

How long will a custom mouth guard last?
For growing children, a mouth guard typically lasts one sports season (or about 6 months). Because children’s jaws are growing and baby teeth are falling out to make room for permanent ones, the fit will change. We recommend bringing the guard to every 6-month check-up so Dr. Jumani can check if it still fits properly.
Can my child wear a mouth guard with braces?
Absolutely—in fact, it is even more critical! An impact to the face while wearing braces can cut the lips and cheeks severely. However, do not use a boil-and-bite guard with braces, as the plastic can get stuck in the brackets. We can make a special orthodontic mouth guard that protects the teeth and braces while allowing for tooth movement.
How do we clean the mouth guard?
Rinse the guard with cool water and a little soap or mouthwash before and after every use. Never use hot water, as it can warp the shape. Store it in the hard, ventilated container we provide to keep it dry and prevent bacteria growth (and to keep the family dog from chewing it!).
Is a mouth guard really necessary for soccer?
Yes. While not always mandated by leagues, soccer is a high-risk sport for dental trauma due to elbows, heads, and feet flying near the face. Studies show a significant number of orofacial injuries occur in soccer, often because players aren't wearing protection.
