You can think of fluoride as a "vitamin" for your child’s teeth. It is a naturally occurring mineral that has been proven to be one of the most effective tools in preventing tooth decay.

At Nurture Kids Dentistry, we believe in building strong smiles from the inside out. Professional fluoride treatments are a standard part of our preventive care visits because they give your child’s teeth a "supercharged" ability to fight off the acid attacks that cause cavities.

How Does Fluoride Work?

The Battle for Enamel Every day, your child’s teeth go through two processes:

  • Demineralization: Acids from plaque bacteria and sugars strip minerals away from the tooth enamel, making it soft and weak.
  • Remineralization: Minerals like calcium, phosphate, and fluoride from saliva and water rebuild the enamel.

When fluoride is applied to the teeth, it speeds up the rebuilding process. It actually becomes part of the tooth structure, creating a new surface that is harder and more resistant to acid than the original tooth! It can even stop or reverse early signs of decay (white spots) before they turn into full-blown cavities.

Because the varnish stays on the teeth for several hours to release fluoride, we ask that you follow a few simple rules for the rest of the day:

  • Soft Diet: Stick to soft foods for dinner (pasta, yogurt, soup). Avoid crunchy or sticky foods like chips, nuts, or gummies that could scrape the varnish off.
  • No Hot Drinks: Avoid hot cocoa or hot soup, as heat can melt the varnish.
  • Skip Brushing Tonight: Do not brush or floss your child's teeth until the next morning. This gives the fluoride the maximum amount of time to soak into the enamel.

Is fluoride toxic? I’ve heard mixed things.
Like many things (including salt, water, and vitamins), fluoride is safe in the correct amount and dangerous in massive quantities. The amount of fluoride used in a varnish application is very small and strictly controlled. Because it hardens quickly on the teeth rather than being swallowed like a liquid, the risk of ingestion is minimal. It is endorsed as safe and effective by the AAPD, ADA, and CDC.
We drink tap water which is fluoridated. Do we still need this treatment?
Yes. Fluoridated water provides systemic fluoride (strengthening developing teeth from the inside), which is great. However, topical fluoride (varnish) provides a concentrated boost directly to the surface of the teeth that are already in the mouth. It is much more potent than water or toothpaste alone and provides extra protection for high-risk areas like deep grooves.
Will fluoride cause white spots on my child's teeth (Fluorosis)?
Professional fluoride treatments given twice a year do not cause fluorosis. Fluorosis (faint white streaks) only happens when a child swallows too much fluoride over a long period while their permanent teeth are forming under the gums—usually from eating toothpaste daily. Once the teeth have erupted, they cannot develop fluorosis.
My child is allergic to gluten/nuts/dairy. Is the varnish safe?
Most modern fluoride varnishes are free of common allergens like gluten, nuts, soy, dairy, and dyes. However, formulations can change. Please inform us of any allergies at the start of your appointment, and we will verify the ingredients of our specific varnish to ensure your child’s safety.
